Before you say, “I don’t believe.” Chapter 31
Have you ever wished you had the faith of your Christian friends?
Many times I have been told by sincere people that they wish they had my faith. I want to reply with words to the effect that it is not my faith they need, but my Jesus. Faith is not some mysterious ingredient owned by some but not others, nor is it a gene, rather like a congenital condition, which either you are born with or you are not. Faith is resting on what God has said, and any of us may do that.
We may display faith, of a sort, many times a day. We have faith, of a sort, when we get on a train that it will take us to our destination, when we sit on a chair believing it will support us, or when we go out for a meal, assuming that it will be free of disease. These are simple examples of faith, which we can readily have, both of past experience and because nothing supernatural is involved.
Faith in God is on a different level. Because God is spirit, for many that requires a greater step of faith. When God sent His Son Jesus into the world, He came from His spiritual realm in Heaven to our earth. He ‘bridged the gap’, so that in ‘seeing Him’ we are ‘seeing God’. Faith is simply taking the attitude that God has said what He has, and I am going to put my confidence in what He has said.
If you have genuine Christian friends, grill them and ask questions. Ask them to share what God means to them, how He has answered their specific prayers, and how you can come to a similar faith in Jesus.
Faith, which is a gift from God, comes through hearing the Word of God. Therefore, I would encourage you to read the Bible for yourself. Start with the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the New Testament, and let Jesus walk off the pages of the Bible and reveal Himself to you. Go to a church which believes and lives out traditional Christian beliefs and is passionate about explaining the gospel to their community. As you hear the Bible preached, you will find that faith grows.
