Can’t you make the Bible mean anything you want?
There are people who twist and pervert the clear Bible teaching, by taking phrases and verses out of their context. Such practice is dishonest. There are those who peddle their religion with little regard to an honest reading of the Bible, even sometimes having their own particular adjusted version of the Bible. Obviously, this too, is wrong.
However, if one reads the Bible openly and honestly, the message is very clear – God is the Maker of all things; we have sinned against Him; our own efforts will never be good enough to bring us back into a relationship with God; Christ came into the world to be the Saviour of all who will trust Him; He died paying the punishment for our sin; Christ rose again from the dead; the living Christ empowers people who receive Him into their lives; there is eternity, and God has told us how He will wind up the affairs of this world.
Reading the Bible gives to us the opportunity to discover God’s word, will and way. Ignoring the Bible is to neglect the treasure trove which tells us what life is about, and why we are here. Twisting the Scripture to further our own ends is to bring God’s rightful anger on ourselves.
Preparing for a long trip, a teenage Christian said to his friend, ‘I am just about packed. I only have to put in a guidebook, a lamp, a mirror, a microscope, a telescope, a volume of fine poetry, a pile of letters, a book of songs, a sword, a hammer and a set of books I have been studying.’ ‘But,’ his friend objected, ‘you’ll never get all that in your bag.’
Oh yes, I will,’ came the reply, ‘it’ll not take that much more space.’ He placed his Bible in a corner of the case and closed the lid!
