How could Christ die for me when I wasn’t even born?
As a child I remember seeing a small steam engine shunting some goods wagons. One wagon bumped into another, and those into another, and so on, until eventually all the weight of the engine and the wagons went into the guard’s van which stood absolutely still taking the impact of all the others on itself.
In a similar way Jesus took the weight of the world’s in upon Himself. Jesus came into the world to go to a cross where He would pay for our sins which would take us all eternity to pay for. He died because he loves us.
When Jesus was on the cross, God who knows all things, took the sin of ordinary people and laid it on Christ.
He died, the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God.
God who is eternal and not bound by time, looked back in time to the beginning, and forward in time to the end, took it all, and laid it on Christ.
He knew how wicked we have been;
He knew that God must punish sin;
So out of pity Jesus said,
He’d bear the punishment instead.
Jesus bore the penalty in our place. His death, therefore, satisfies both God’s justice – sin has been punished; and His love – through His mercy we can be forgiven. That does not mean that there is blanket forgiveness for everyone – God offers the free gift of salvation to all who will repent (turn from their sin) and believe (trust in Christ). There is a clear choice put before all: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus our Lord. Sin is serious, either I pay the price of my own sin, or trust the substitute Saviour who died in my place. Sadly, many refuse and continue to sin, but ‘Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.’ (Romans 10:13)
The Bible says, ‘All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all’ ~ Isaiah 53:6
