Is faith just a leap in the dark?
Blind faith is a leap in the dark, but that is foolish. Christian faith is resting on the promises of God. It is based upon the solid foundation of God’s Word the Bible, and God’s work in the world and through His Son Jesus. The faith that saves a person is not whimsical or mystical. It relies on the solid historical truth of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Faith is a gift from God; He will give it to those who seek. In the Bible we read, ‘So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God’. (Romans 10:17). When a person reads the Bible with an open heart, God is working in them so that they believe. In fact faith, like the whole of true salvation is a gift from God. He speaks to that individual concerning the truth of what has been written in the Bible.
The Gospel of John is a good place to begin. Towards the end of that Gospel we read John’s motive for writing. Its says: ‘and truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing you may have life in His name.’ (John 20:30,31).
Christianity stands up to the test of cross-examination. historically, archaeologically, scientifically, logically and experientially it is accurate. Faith is the act of committing one’s self to Christ on the basis of the truth of all that God has revealed. Then, when spiritual life follows, that faith becomes even more sure and certain.
