What is the Bible about?
God has spoken to this world through the Bible so that we may come to know four basic things.
First, God wants us to know who He is. It is easy to start making God in our image rather than realising that He is far greater than anything our minds can truly grasp.
Secondly, God wants us to know who we are. We have been created in the image of God and were made and meant to know Him. Sin spoilt that, and leaves us empty knowing that there is something missing. God alone fills the God-shaped gulf in each individual.
Thirdly, God wants us to know what He has done. ‘For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ (John 3:16). The Old Testament looks forward through poetry, prophecy, and pictures to the coming of Christ, and the New Testament tells us of His Life, death, resurrection, exaltation and one-day return. His work and influence are described, detailing God’s great rescue mission for men and women.
Fourthly, God wants us to know what we must do. The Bible tells us of God’s dealings with His people. It clearly explains the only way whereby people can come to find peace with God.
These are the basic, interwoven themes of the Bible. They deal with life’s most crucial issues. When you open the Bible to read, you open the lips of God for Him to speak.
‘Behind and beneath the Bible, above and beyond the Bible is the God of the Bible. The Bible is God’s written revelation of His will to man. Its central theme is salvation through Jesus Christ’ – Henrietta C Mears
