Questions about the Bible: 8. Why don’t we read about dinosaurs in the Bible?
Why don’t we read about dinosaurs in the Bible?
I have often been asked this intriguing question. The Bible doesn’t speak of ‘dinosaurs’, but neither does it speak of the dodo or even cats. This could be taken further: the Bible doesn’t talk about many things found in life today – wi-fi hotspots, cars or iPods.
However, just because the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about dinosaurs or any of these other items doesn’t mean they don’t or didn’t exist. The non-mentioning of them is not a good argument for their non-existence. The Bible is not an encyclopaedia, or zoological catalogue. Having said that, there is mention in the Bible of animals with names like leviathan and behemoth, (for instance, in Psalm 104 v. 26 or Job 40 v. 15) which we read were huge creatures, and some have speculated that maybe they were dinosaurs. Whether or not they were does not alter the accuracy of the Scripture.
