How can a God of love send anyone to hell?
Hell is a place of awful, eternal and conscious separation from God’s love and mercy. Jesus spoke of those who ‘will be cast into outer darkness.’ He said, ‘There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,’ (Matthew 8:12)
The Bible never speaks of purgatory, or a second chance after death. In fact, Jesus taught that between heaven and hell ‘there is a great gulf fixed’ so that no person can pass from hell to heaven or indeed from heaven to hell.
God loves us so much He sent Christ to be the escape route from hell to heaven. He is ‘not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance’(2 Peter 3:9); but for those who refuse to receive Christ as Lord and Saviour, God who is just, has no alternative but to punish sin and the sinner.
It is a fair question to ask, ‘Where will you spend eternity?’
The moment you die you will be more aware of yourself than ever you were before you died. Standing by the bed of a dying friend, as the person took their final breath a person said, “They’ve gone.” We might quietly and seriously wonder, “Where?” Where have they gone? That is the great question. Far more important is the personal question, “Where will I spend eternity?”
You can escape eternal punishment, and be sure of heaven. How? The Bible, speaking of those who of us who have turned from sin and trusted Christ, says, ‘And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.’ 1 John 5:11-12
